Regulation on Awards Adjudged by the Russian Academy of Sciences

The Russian Academy of Sciences, within its competence:

  • memorializes the outstanding scientists - members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, establishes and awards medals and prizes for the outstanding scientific and scientific research achievements, including gold medals and prizes named after the prominent scientists, medals and prizes for young scientists and students of higher educational institutions;

GENERAL PROVISIONS

For the purpose of scientists incentive for scientific research, discoveries and inventions significant for the science and practice, the Russian Academy of Sciences awards gold medals and prizes named after prominent scientists.

Gold medals are awarded for outstanding scientific work, discoveries and inventions or for aggregate work of great scientific and practical importance.

Only individual nominees can participate in gold medals competitions.

Prizes are awarded for individual outstanding scientific work, discoveries and inventions, as well as for series of scientific work under a common subject.

Only papers or series of papers on common subject of individual authors can be submitted for award application. Only leading authors are nominated at papers submission, and not more than three persons.

The following persons have the right to nominate for gold medals and prizes:

a) academicians and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences;
b) scientific organizations, higher educational institutions;
c) scientific and engineering organizations;
d) research councils of the Russian Academy of Sciences and other organizations engaged in mainstream scientific researches;
e) scientific and technical councils of State Committees, Ministries, Agencies, technical councils of industrial plants, and design centers.

Organizations or persons nominating a candidate for the gold medal or a prize shall present three months ahead the award date at the Russian Academy of Sciences (119991, GSP, Moscow V-71, Leninskiy ave., 14) the following with the header 'Nomination for Gold Medal (Award) named after ...':

a) reasoned application including scientific characteristic of paper and its significance for science and national economy development;
b) at submission of papers for prize nomination – published scientific paper (series of papers), scientific discovery or investigation materials – in three copies (it is allowed to submit only one copy at submission of classified papers);
Note: At submission of a nominee for the Gold Medal, it is not obligatory to present published scientific papers (series of papers), scientific discovery or investigation materials.
c) the author personal information (list of principal scientific works, inventions, discoveries, place of work and position, home address, office and home telephone numbers).

Government awards-winning works and Government personal awards-winning works are excluded of nomination for gold medals and prizes named after outstanding scientists.

Scientists awarded with gold medals or prizes are granted the right to place note ‘Awarded with gold medal (prize) named after … of the Russian Academy of Sciences for … year’ at paper heading at publication.

Decisions of the RAS Presidium on gold medals and prizes awarding as well as short annotations on works winning gold medals or prizes are published in the Herald of the Russian Academy of Sciences, in the News of the Russian Academy of Sciences of corresponding series and in Poisk newspaper. Herald of the Russian Academy of Sciences publishes portraits of scientists awarded with gold medals and prizes.

Award-winning printed scientific papers examined at the RAS Presidium Meeting are delivered to the Russian Academy of Sciences Library for safekeeping.

Gold medals and diplomas on gold medals award are handed to winners at Annual General Assembly of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Diplomas on prizes award are handed to winners at the RAS Presidium Meeting.
