President of the Russian Academy of Sciences

Since 1917, the Academy of Sciences began to elect its president for the very first time. The first elected president of the Academy of Sciences became A.P.Karpinsky, who held the position since May 15, 1917 to July 15, 1936

On May 29, 2013 at the General Assembly of the Russian Academy of Sciences, RAS presidential elections took place. Academy members elected Academician Vladimir Fortov to this post.

General Assembly of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences and President of the Russian Academy of Sciences constitute management bodies of the Russian Academy of Sciences.


President of the Russian Academy of Sciences provides overall leadership of the Russian Academy of Sciences, directs the work of the RAS Presidium.

The RAS President:

  • acts without power of attorney on behalf of the RAS, represents its interests in public authorities, local governments and other organizations in the Russian Federation and abroad;
  • manages the RAS assets and finances in accordance with the procedure defined by the RAS Presidium;
  • concludes contracts, issues powers of attorney, performs other legal actions;
  • opens the RAS accounts with the Federal Treasury agencies, banks and other credit institutions;
  • directs development and implementation of the RAS HR policy;
  • appoints managers of the RAS science support and social organizations and managers of structural subdivisions (departments, independent departments) of the RAS Presidium, applies incentives and disciplinary sanctions thereto;
  • awards the RAS personnel with the departmental decorations;
  • resolves other issues of management of RAS activity.

While exercising his powers the RAS President issues instructions.
