International Workshop between RAS and National Institute of Health and Medical Research of France (INSERM) «Neurodegenerative diseases: new approaches to the evaluation of pathogenesis and the development of diagnostics and treatment» was held on 23-24 September 2013 at the RAS Presidium Building (Leninsky Avenue 32A).

The meeting was dedicated to one of the fundamental topic in neuroscience – cellular molecular mechanisms of degeneration and plasticity of brain’s neurons as well as discussion of joint international projects in the frame of the Russian-European multilateral scientific Call - ERA.Net RUS plus, which launch is planned for April of 2014.

At the workshop it was given an assessment of the current state and the prospects of the early (pre-clinical) diagnosis development and preventive treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, particularly Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. Successful promotion of this research area implies consolidation of intellectual and maintenance capabilities of the developed countries. For many years, RAS scientists actively cooperate with their foreign counterparts in this field and, especially, with the French scientists from the INSERM, the major long-term partner of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the field of biomedical research.

As the main speakers leading Russian and French scientists presented their reports. The Russian side was represented by scientists from Moscow (IDB, IMG, IPAC, INFiVND), Pushchino (CSI), Chernogolovka (IPAC), St. Petersburg (IEPB, St. Petersburg Academic University), Kazan (IBB), and Ufa (IBG). On the French side there were 8 scientists from Paris, Lille, Bordeaux, Toulouse and from other INSERM research centers. French colleagues had the opportunity to get acquainted with latest research developments conducted by Russian scientists while visiting a number of RAS institutes (IDB, IBG, IMG).
